Abstract

This article discusses the calculus modernization initiative at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), which began in fall 2020 in response to guidance from the Mathematical Association of America, changes in science and technology, and direction from leadership in the United States Air Force (USAF) and United States Space Force (USSF). The calculus curriculum at USAFA has remained largely unchanged for decades, and many cadets struggle with the numeracy and algebra skills required to succeed in traditional college calculus courses; changes in technology have created opportunities to reimagine how calculus is taught. This article describes the modernization process and argues that it provides cadets the needed skills to succeed academically, while emphasizing the importance of data literacy and acumen in countering near peer adversaries.
